In the book by Peter Freuchen "The Book of The Seven Seas" he describes how
he was marooned on an ice floe 2 miles wide and 7 miles long circling in the
North Atlantic for 7 years. (Seven Years!) He survived on his dog sled
team, seals, walrus and an occasional polar bear. (nothing but meat for
seven years) He was checked out by a team of Doctors when he was finally
able to reach land. His health was perfect! This book is still in print,
I believe was written about 1957.

The first low carb book was written in 1863 by William Banting, a morbidly
obese person who after years finally gave up on doctors. He finally found
a Doctor that put him on the following diet: up to six ounces of bacon,
beef, mutton, venison, kidneys, fish or any form of poultry or game; the
'fruit of any pudding' - he was denied the pastry any vegetable except
potato; and at dinner, two or three glasses of good claret, sherry or
Madeira.
Banting could drink tea without milk or sugar. Champagne, port and beer were
forbidden and he could eat only one ounce of toast.

Search Google for William Banting.
