question:

What advantages does that arrangement give you over an X11 login
or xproxy session?

Just curious.  For reference, I've been using VNC to access an NT
box from my FreeBSD system, and even with a full-duplex 100baseTX
network and a reasonably fast NT system (400MHz Celeron with 128M
RAM), it's borderline useful.  On a P1-160/32M NT system it was
like pulling teeth.  Back in '92 or '93, though, XFree on a PC with
an ET4000 graphics card and 10-baseT ethernet (all ISA) felt faster
than the (admittedly unaccelerated and too-high resolution) Sun
console.
