When I started I used an IBM 1401 with a massive 12K (sic) of ram (ferrite core). If something fell into the CPU, you would get parity errors at progressively higher addresses as the item dropped progressively through the ferrite cores. We wrote in assembler or machine code. There was NO operating system (in 12K? you have to be kidding). Each program booted and was read from punched cards. There were 12 analysts and programmers in the department running this one machine.
