you sure? how?
I can set Sender: in .muttrc but that's not how the
email appears when it comes back and I can't set From (no colon)
at all (they're the 2 I'm talking about).

well it's just a sort of default value, I can change it before
I send the email if I want something different, not really
part of the problem though.

it seemed pretty complicated to me, so I thought either I was
missing something or it is complicated, I was hoping it was
the former

I know and it's the envelope From (or Sender, but I think it's From)
that optus looks at (hence the problem)

yes that's all fine (and I agree it is unusual on optus' part!)

exactly, that's the tricky bit!
(see my original question I asked)

that's all well and good and is what I have been happily doing until
now (again see my original post, I described this). The problem is
doing all this stuff is in postfix, not mutt, which means I
cannot change it automatically every time I want to use a different
email address (without changing postfix's config, as root, and
restarting it every time I go into a specific mutt mailbox and
want a different email address to appear in the mail headers).
But you seem to be saying in your last paragraph that I have to
set it in postfix as well? but how does postfix know which
mailbox I'm in? it doesn't, can I make postfix set a different
