I will have to agree with you there that smaller cells (no more then
4-5 miles) are better solution in the long run. Because with large
cells you have to do high installs on the CPE end to get a good
signal.
But higher power on the radio sure helps out in many situations and
allow you to have to avoid the extremely large, bulky and ugly 24dB
grid dishes. If one can do say the 16dB Vagi's or maybe 19dB grids
that are not so large then everyone is happier. But to drop from 24dB
antenna to say a 16dB antenna means you have to get 8dB more power
somewhere so going from a 17dB radio to say a 23dB radio then is
essential because then your total EIRP still is close to the same and
the link you could make with the 24dB antenna you now can do with a
16dB antenna...
