I too had nothing but trouble with LaCie drives - also just out of
warranty when problems started. My experiences with WD hard disks
restored my faith in 3rd party devices as these have been flawless to
date well beyond the warranty period - and hope that the experience
continues.

LaCie support very responsive and willing but not actually any help in
resolving the problems - external power supply units failing and HD
running very hot (too hot to handle). This was prior to the exchange
programme being put in place. But the volume of problems reported for
certain families of LaCie devices suggests a possible QA problem.
