No, I don't think I misunderstood you. My point was, gravity around the earth is pretty well constant except for minor variations. What I forgot to say, and apologize, was that the variations are caused by the shape of the earth.
I've been using the general formula for gravity as 32 ft/sec/sec for years, and in civilized Canada - in other words, close to the 49th parallel, up to +10 degrees North, it's pretty well constant. Did you try the experiment I suggested? Get any results? My better half sez that I was just getting you into trouble, I guess she saw it from a woman's point of view. :):):) LOL By the way, do you live in Portugal? If so, know anything about a wine that starts with an X, I think it's Xerex or something. Anyway, we make wine at home, we've heard about it but don't know too much. Is it sweet, dry, and if so how dry? thanks Pat -----Original Message----- From: Daniel Carrera [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 2008/05/22 01:29 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [social] I am not receiving anything from this list Pat McBride wrote: > Daniel, are you serious?????????? I'm confused. Did I say that gravity changed other than through variations around the earth? Gravity varies around the earth due to the slightly irregular shape of the earth (e.g. poles vs equator) and variations in the composition of the tectonic masses (density). In addition, since I was talking about a pendulum, it is important to note that the net force (what a pendulum really measures) depends on the centripetal acceleration which varies significantly with latitude. This is why the Europeans find it cheaper to ship rockets to Guiana to launch them there, and why the Russians made a deal with ESA to launch rockets from Guiana too - the Soyuz will have almost double the payload just by launching from Guiana instead of Baikonur. Did you interpret me saying something other than this?
