in general, 3.5" disks suck a lot of power, especially when spinning up. If you draw power from the onboard soekris SATA power plug, you'll notice quickly that the board just reboots or grinds to a halt in the ComBIOS You can work around that by having a second power source (like a little adapter with a converter like this: http://soekris.kd85.com/images/tn/dsc07828.jpg.html for the disk, but I guess you want to avoid that? Input 12 volt, output 5 and 12 volt. You could splice your 25 watts power supply and supply 12 V to the soekris and 12 V to the adapter. A 3.5" disk takes about 12 Watts I've been running the WDC green power disks in 1 TB and 2 TB version without problems on the 5501: http://soekris.kd85.com/images/20080603-DSC00002.JPG It spins up slowly so sometimes it's not detected by the BIOS on a fresh boot, but then again I always put the OS on a CF card The disks in itself work great in combo with the 5501, and take power from the SATA power plug wd1 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 1: <WDC WD2002FYPS-01U1B0> wd1: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 1907729MB, 3907029168 sectors wd1(pciide0:0:1): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 2 > In addition I am wondering if anyone has the 1 slot standard case for > this board and can tell me whether a 3.5" hdd would fit next to the > board (mounting the HDD with a bit of creativity). that could would but you need right angled power and data cables, like this: http://soekris.kd85.com/images/20080603-DSC00004.JPG http://soekris.kd85.com/images/20080603-DSC00003.JPG Not sure if this would be a good idea for cooling though Wim. _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
