Try it under UltraLinux, I bet it works just fine.

You can enable the badblocks test in mke2fs to verify
that each block on the disk can be accessed successfully.

Also, I've seen many reports of Solaris's IDE driver on
UltraSparc choking on several commodity disks.  Maybe
this is the case here, maybe not.

Like I said, test it with Linux.
