Dave, I've already done some work on trying to figure it out
since I've noticed that serial consoles work fine with Debian.
Part of the difference is that they use agetty instead of
getty_ps ... I think they also use /dev/ttyS0 instead of
/dev/console. I've found that if you change the /etc/inittab
entry to point to /dev/ttyS0 instead of /dev/console, you have
better results...
... it just seems like there's a problem with getty_ps using
the /dev/console device for some reason... so it could be a
console device kernel bug or a bug with getty_ps ... and I've
filed a bug already... see:
