There are a number of possible reasons for this (I forget their nature
now as mine has been working for ages) - all discussed in the archive.

The LCP mesage indicates that either the far end is not reponding to
your LCP requests, or they are not getting out of the machine in the
first place. If your connection *has* worked previously, then it is
almost certainly the latter.

This has, I think, also been discussed, and fixed I believe - if you
don't have the latest release, try an upgrade.

We are, but the pppoatm module is for connecting to kernel ATM devices
with ppp. pppoa[23] does this job instead.

In the kernel-mode drivers, a kernel module connects to the USB device
and shuffles the data to/from an ATM psuedo device. This ATM device is
then connected to by the pppoatm module of pppd.

In the user mode drivers, pppoa[23] connects to the USB device and
presents a psuedo-tty device to pppd.

In theory, there is no reason why there shouldn't be a mix of these
two ideas, with a user-mode driver presenting an ATM device to pppd
which uses pppoatm.so to communicate with it.

Hope that helps clarify a few things.

Peter
