I always threw a plug in the bottom valve to prevent tripping from unsuspecting people, and left the top valve open...

Like I said, we work in 3 top spring break destinations and we have learned. And they indicate as much in the commentary of the NFPA-13 handbook. The condensate nipple is required to collect condensate and other moisture from the system and to minimize the potential for excessive loss of air pressure, possibly tripping the dry-pipe or preaction valve. When I started in the field in the late 70's, I was taught the same thing. This is a good reason to promote the AFSA apprenticeship program so the fitters coming up now can be taught the correct way to do things. And yes, according to the apprenticeship course, the top valve is to be left open. I always thought that the top valve is open and the bottom valve shut. A fitter told me that both valves are supposed to be shut. When I asked him where that came from, he admitted that's what he was taught. Which is correct, if either? Todd G.
