Every now and then this pre-claibrated refractometer theme pops up and every know and then I like to comment on how to use the good old sugar measuring Brix scale model for everything by establishing a baseline on site and then measuring against it so once again:
Mix up a 100ml solution of whatever chemical you want to refract at the proper water/chemical ratio. Look at it through the refractometer and note the point. This is a perfect solution as you would mix it on day one in larger quantities but at the same proportion. Now take a sample from the system and compare it to the baseline just established. An added bonus is that if the customer is present when you start pulling out graduated scales, pipettes, little bottles of mystery chemicals, etc. he thinks you're Mr. Wizard and isn't so unhappy about that big bill. I've also impressed insurance engineers that have never seen anyone do that before. A little patter on what you're doing like you're trying to educate the ignorant helps round out the show. If I sound a bit cynical I'm coming down off an argument with a fire alarm guy who's trying to use misapplied wording from 72 to supersede ASME rules.
