Craig, I've never had to leave the good ol US of A to have clients tell me the same thing. "We didn't have to do that in Tennessee, and we didn't have to do that in California", etc.... This must truly be an international out clause.

And probably won't. If the project mandate is to construct per the IBC, then design it, spec it and issue it per the code and let them do what they want with it after that. We've both fought these battles to the last breath and know they will do what they want to do regardless of our recommendation. The only hope is either a strong and insistent owner or Underwriter who won't permit this kind of stuff to be installed. But we are dealing with a different mindset and different way of doing things than here at home. In dealing with an international client here in the states I've lost count on how many times they have said "but we do not do that back in ______". I finally had to cut him off and remind him that he wasn't back in the home country. They do not like our codes one bit, but they have to live with them to do business here. International projects are so much fun aren't they? Ought to try engineering in Russia, oy vey! Craig L. However, there's always an exception isn't there. Because it's common in China, they want to use coated and wrapped carbon steel pipe for the underground. Even when it was legal, I never liked it because of the leakage potential, maintenance requirements, additional cathodic protection often required, etc. NFPA 13 and 24, permit steel pipe only if specifically listed for underground service. I don't think I've ever seen listed underground steel pipe. If any of you have, please advise. Regardless of whether or not there is such an animal, I may lose the battle since it won't likely be a case where a permit will be denied. Thanks for your help.
