Have seen guards being installed in most gyms, though I'm not sure of their
practical advantage.

I designed a sprinkler system for a school where a fire started in the attic
space above the gym and destroyed the entire school. The water supply was
storage tanks and fire pump. At the corner where the fire started, was a
standard school stage (platform). NFPA investigated the fire and one of
their findings was that the gym should have been designed for OH2 due to the
"stage".

Ed,

We have a number of fully sprinklered schools and community centers in our
jurisdiction with no incidents to date.

As a sidebar most are used as multipurpose; gyms, sporting events, large
meetings, craft fairs.............

Subject: Sprinklers in gymnasium

Any thoughts about types of sprinklers or protection for them in a school
gymnasium? I can visualize kids shooting basketballs at them.
