Ahhh practicing the fine art of expressing a different opinion in a humble manner (ok who's on Steve's computer?????). You KNOW he over did it.

This is one of the few areas where logic is completely thrown out the window. If you look in the Handbook, it states that the larger area is required to compensate for the expected delay in sprinkler activation (I thought it use to also say something about fire breaking out in multiple areas too). This is a physical phenomena thats not a function of the type of sprinkler. Nonetheless, LOCATION HAS MEANING and with it located in 11.2.3.1.4 which further states - regardless of which of the two methods (density/area or room design)", it applies only to spray sprinklers in the occupancy hazard approach. Similar text was added to general section 12.1 for Storage in the 07 edition so it applies there too. BUT it does NOT apply to the residential approach since it is a separate. individual approach without such text. This is explicitly supported by the Handbook too on page 507 (that even has a question in the margin emphasizing it).

Now having said that, this will change in the 2010 edition. Come June, you can get a copy of the ROP and see such exciting tidbits rumbling down the pike toward you. The May issue of Sprinkler Age will also have several articles on likely changes that occurred at the ROP phase (since nothing is a given until the new edition is actually released by NFPA).

As for the corridor design, that is up for debate. It is a Special Design Area under the density/area method using spray sprinklers so I'll sit on the It Applies debate team.

I believe the AHJ overdid it. The 4 sprinkler design area for
residential sprinklers is paramount - you don't adjust it upward. If
your design area is a corridor, I don't think you would adjust it
either. Those provisions are for spray sprinklers and the area/ density
method.
