Forum: I am in need of some clarification and thoughts. Section 8.6.4.1.1 states that sprinkler deflectors for unobstructed construction shall be 1 inch to 12 inches below the ceiling. Section 8.6.4.1.1.3 says the requirements of 8.6.4.1.1 shall not apply for light and ordinary hazard occupancies with ceilings that are non-combustible or limited combustible.
I have a concrete ceiling with concrete structural beams that are 18 inches deep and spaced 10 feet on center roughly. By definition, this is unobstructed. Can I place my sprinklers, by code, such that the deflector is more than 12 inches below the ceiling? What is the lowest you can place your deflector if this is the case (we would be no lower than 22 inches, but I am still curious what the limit is)? We can eliminate some sprinklers if we can. If not, the obstruction rules get in the way and we add some sprinklers. Thanks.
