>From your definition you have panel construction which is obstructed. As
long as the panel is 300 square feet or less, which you say it is, then the
sprinklers can be per the obstructed ceiling distances (8.6.4.1.2 (1) - 1
to 6 inches below the beams with a maximum of 22 inches.

I am missing something (would not be the first time). The definition of
unobstructed construction states that " . . . all construction types where
spacing of structural members exceeds 7 1/2 feet on center", and I have 10
foot on center. Based on this, I went to unobstructed construction, 12
inch maximum deflector to ceiling and applied obstruction rules to my 18
inch deep concrete beams.
How do I apply the 300 square feet you reference below (I have about 200
square feet +/- to a bay)? I see the 300 square feet referenced under
obstructed construction. Can I make a case for this? Does the 300 square
feet apply to all obstructed construction or only composite wood joists
listed in 8.6.4.1.2 (4)? Can I make a case for obstructed?
I am sure I am overlooking something.
All help and comments appreciated. This makes a big difference in what we
can do.
Thanks again for all the great comments and insight.

RE: Deflector Distance From Ceiling
If the bays created by the beams were not larger than 300 s.f. then it
would
qualify for obstructed and you could go the 1"/6"/22", but if they are
larger then your looking at bay spacing your sprinklers.

Subject: Deflector Distance From Ceiling
Forum:
I am in need of some clarification and thoughts. Section 8.6.4.1.1 states
that sprinkler deflectors for unobstructed construction shall be 1 inch to
12 inches below the ceiling. Section 8.6.4.1.1.3 says the requirements of
8.6.4.1.1 shall not apply for light and ordinary hazard occupancies with
ceilings that are non-combustible or limited combustible.
I have a concrete ceiling with concrete structural beams that are 18
inches deep and spaced 10 feet on center roughly. By definition, this is
unobstructed. Can I place my sprinklers, by code, such that the deflector
is more than 12 inches below the ceiling? What is the lowest you can
place your deflector if this is the case (we would be no lower than 22
inches, but I am still curious what the limit is)? We can eliminate some
sprinklers if we can. If not, the obstruction rules get in the way and we
add some sprinklers.
Thanks.
