I use the examples listed in 13-2007 A.3.7.1 and A.3.7.2. In A.3.7.1 par. #4, last sentence puts your situation as obstructed. In A.3.7.2 par. B defines what you have as unobstructed. I choose what's best for me in this case. Until someone can tell me the error of my interpretation I proceed in this manor. Remember that this is just my opinion and of very little value to anyone other than myself. I myself would be interested in some input that could enlighten me.

The definition of unobstructed construction states that " . . . all construction types where spacing of structural members exceeds 7 1/2 feet on center", and I have 10 foot on center. Based on this, I went to unobstructed construction, 12 inch maximum deflector to ceiling and applied obstruction rules to my 18 inch deep concrete beams. How do I apply the 300 square feet you reference below (I have about 200 square feet +/- to a bay)? I see the 300 square feet referenced under obstructed construction. Can I make a case for this? Does the 300 square feet apply to all obstructed construction or only composite wood joists listed in 8.6.4.1.2 (4)? Can I make a case for obstructed? I am sure I am overlooking something. All help and comments appreciated. This makes a big difference in what we can do. Thanks again for all the great comments and insight. Section 8.6.4.1.1 states that sprinkler deflectors for unobstructed construction shall be 1 inch to 12 inches below the ceiling. Section 8.6.4.1.1.3 says the requirements of 8.6.4.1.1 shall not apply for light and ordinary hazard occupancies with ceilings that are non-combustible or limited combustible. I have a concrete ceiling with concrete structural beams that are 18 inches deep and spaced 10 feet on center roughly. By definition, this is unobstructed. Can I place my sprinklers, by code, such that the deflector is more than 12 inches below the ceiling? What is the lowest you can place your deflector if this is the case (we would be no lower than 22 inches, but I am still curious what the limit is)? We can eliminate some sprinklers if we can. If not, the obstruction rules get in the way and we add some sprinklers. Thanks.
