Remember that 250# is a fat guy on a ladder, or actually a fat guy falling
off his ladder, grabbing the sprinkler pipe to save himself from a broken
neck, cause his boss gave him a safety harness and all the necessary gear,
and fall protection training, but he thinks he doesn't need it to just run
up the ladder and tighten a leaking head.
(This in no way reflects on, or is in ref. to Tom D.)
The five times is just a safety factor, same as you 10% or 10Psi in the Hyd.
Calc.

>But that didn't answer your question. In my opinion NFPA-13 only
applies to the hanger assembly itself. Does that mean the sprinkler
designer is off the hook ?. By no means >someone has to do the load
calculation otherwise the application is incomplete.

Exactly. The paragraph I mentioned (9.2.1.3) pertaining to the Building
Structure in 13 has been used to make the sprinkler contractor hire a
structural engineering firm to provide proof that we were in compliance
with Chap 9 of Our standard. In Todd's situation.. the hanger has to
meet 5 times plus 250. Since it is not listed under the section for
Building Structure in 13, the 5 times does not need to be added, only
the weight plus 250.
