Does anyone know the history of requiring backflow preventers on sprinkler systems? I just attended a meeting at the city of Phoenix regarding their backflow requirement. The discussion turned to where does/did the backflow requirement come from and is there an EPA, Health Dept. or Federal mandate to install them? The water departments answer was "because it's in the plumbing code".
