Although interesting I'm not sure how this relates to my question. Only a BFP on the well discharge would have prevented contaminating the aquifer.
I think the intent of the SWDA was to prevent cross connection of municipal and private water systems (wells). Not to isolate the pipe connected to the municipal system once it crossed on to private property, if that makes any sense? Here in Colorado it the Colorado Primary Drinking water regulations. These programs are normally administered by the Dept of Health or Environment. In Colorado wells and all connections to Aquifers are covered. The aquifer is the drinking water source, if that becomes contaminated, how may well users will be affected? So here they cover even irrigation wells. About 10 years ago a rancher wanted to add fertilizer to his irrigation water by injecting it into his discharge from his irrigation pump. No backflow protection the injection pump through a series of circumstances, contaminated the aquifer with 12,00 Gallons of fertilizer. This Aquifer served as primary drinking water for several hundred homes, which then had to be supplied with water for several years until the aquifer cleared itself. So if your adding anything like anti freeze to a system on a well, use and air gap or RPZ. (Air gaps are the most affordable and lowest cost way to achieve the highest level of protection.) Check with you state dept of health, I'll bet they can tell you all about it. Thom McMahon, SET Firetech, Inc. 2560 Copper Ridge Dr P.O. The modern interpretation seems to include any pipe on private property regardless of the water source. Since 1974, the law has been amended in 1986 and 1996 to incorporate needed actions to protect the public's water supply. Under this law, the water purveyor is prohibited from installing or maintaining a water service connection to a consumer's water system within its jurisdiction, unless the public potable water supply is protected against backflow by an approved prevention assembly(s) installed at the service connection or point of delivery. The SDWA provides the when and where the National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC) the how. In NJ the NSPC FDC BFP requirement is proposed to be amended back to the 2003 (1700 Ft requirement) from the current 2006 (All requirement) John Drucker -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Fletcher, Ron Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 4:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Backflow requirement Does anyone know the history of requiring backflow preventers on sprinkler systems? I just attended a meeting at the city of Phoenix regarding their backflow requirement. The discussion turned to where does/did the backflow requirement come from and is there an EPA, Health Dept. or Federal mandate to install them? The water departments answer was "because it's in the plumbing code".
