Neither.

When sprinklers are combined with standpipes, it is required that every
sprinkler system connection to a standpipe be furnished with both a check valve
and control valve (14). Schematically, sprinklers are downstream of a
standpipe, on the system side of the required sectional standpipe control
valve. If required standpipe hose valves are connected to a sprinkler system
you've got the reciprical condition, which is only allowed in selected
occupancies by code.

To combine them, lay out your standpipe system - valves on each floor and
risers. Then feed the sprinklers off of the standpipe system:

1) With a separate valved connection at the main riser and a dedicated
sprinkler riser to upper floors, or

2) Valved connection at each floor or,

3) A valved connection somewhere along the standpipe inter-connecting feed main
ahead of the standpipe section control valves.

Keep in mind that if you have 3 or more hose connections on any one floor
supplied by a single standpipe, the demand is 750 GPM. IF you have more than
one standpipe riser, it's possibe to arrange them as 1+3 or 2+2 or 3+1, so you
really need to do this thoughtfully. Sounds like you might need another pair
of eyes?

I seen that. This Bldg is a single floor with 4 hose valves. Does this mean
that the standpipe system connects to the sprinkler system riser, or can each
hose valve individually connect to the sprinkler system mains?

 Keith, Steve

Take a look at 2006 IBC 905.3; "Standpipe systems are allowed to be combined
 with automatic sprinkler systems"

Does that help you're situation ?

The building code described specific conditions where hose valves can be
connected to sprinkler systems, such as covered mall buildings. NFPA 14
describes the requirements for design of standpipe systems; NFPA 13 same for
sprinkler systems. Both standards prescribe the provisions for combined
systems but IF you're requirement is for a standpipe system (as prescribed
by CODE), then the answer is likely that the hose connections can't just be
taken off the sprinkler piping. Unfortunately, it's not just a yes/no
equation so the answer is conditional.

 Subject: Standpipe system

The Engineer of Record has indicated that standpipe hose valves shall be
located in a building that we are designing. Of course he hasn't shown how
they are to be connected, his note is to connect to the sprinkler system. In
the past I have ran a separate main w/ a control valve from the riser to
feed the hose valves. Can they be connected to the sprinkler mains?

 Thanks

 Keith
