What is the NEED for sprinklers in educational occupancies?
I still affirm that sprinkler are not NEEDED for life safety...especially
in Type I or Type II construction.
I believe kids / teachers have available safe egress time before
untenability--
in most schools constructed within the last 30 years.
But, If we have a NEED to save their dreams, then maybe spending money
on sprinklers is the theme.
Maybe too, spending some money on raising the caliber of
the teaching environment and teacher-student ratio
could get it too. I don't know about you, but the rigid beauracracy
and rote learning instituted by my intemediate and secondary schooling
did
little to keep me dreaming, other than for leaving.
the average fire fatalities in US educational facilites for years 2000 -
2005 was zero.
maybe because of sprinklers, but maybe because of:
ample exits
noncombustible construction
fire loads are not significant in most public schools, relative to the
volume they contain.
yes, yes, sprinkler everything, it is a simple solution,
and a solution that is good for society (and our industry not so
ironically),
if not for individual owners that do not take into account the values of
some
of the intangible benefits,
but the type of dogmatic thinking that is needed to say 'sprinkler
everything"
(though it keeps our industry rolling)
without evaluating the NEED, runs counter-intuitive
what a dreamer's mind might find most important: flexibility.
scot deal

(and yes, I know the NAHB is reading this, and if we can't defend
sprinklers in an open and honest debate, then sprinklers don't deserve
a place in every household. Based on a societal need (and cost/benefit
basis), I believe sprinklers deserve that place.
