Looks like the language is identical in the 2008 and 2002 editions.  NFPA
70-2002:  110.26(F)(1)

(b)  Foreign Systems.  The area above the dedicated space required by
110.26(F)(1)(a) shall be permitted to contain foreign systems, provided
protection is installed to avoid damage to the electrical equipment from
condensation, leaks, or breaks in such foreign systems.
(c)  Sprinkler Protection.  Sprinkler protection shall be permitted for the
dedicated space where the piping complies with this section.

I have taken this section to mean that I can run sprinkler piping in the elec
room provided that it is outside the required dedicated space (the width and
depth of the panel, cabinet, etc. to a height of 6’ above or to the structural
ceiling, whichever is lower) or is above the dedicated space so long as I run a
sheet metal gutter under the piping to catch any drips.  This language is not
intended to prohibit sprinkler protection of the elec room and the sprinkler
may discharge into the dedicated space (based on its pattern) so long as the
piping to which it is attached is as indicated.

Don't have a 2002 but how does the wording compare to the 2008?

Subject: Electrical Rooms and Archives

I usually save Forum postings if I expect to need them in the future.  Of
course, I thought I knew the rules on dedicated space for electrical equipment
well enough that I did not need to save the latest round of discussion on this
subject.  Now I have the following comment on a submittal:

"Provide a note that no HVAC, plumbing or fire sprinkler lines will pass
through the electrical rooms.  Only what services this room is permitted in
this room.  2002 NEC 110.26."

I am pretty sure this was discussed in the last month or so and the consensus
of the Forum was that there was no such restriction.  In one location on the
web I went to the AFSA archives, but can't find anything newer than 2004.
I may be looking in the wrong place.  From the current afsa website, I cannot
get the archives (member only?)

Can anyone give me a quick tutorial on finding this subject in the archives,
please?
