Motor Oil = Class IIIB, FP > 200F. NFPA 30 gives criteria for sprinklers. But
note that if there is a pool fire, water based sprinklers will have little
effect on extinguishment, they can help cool other containers to prevent or
minimize rupture. Foam-water would be the better choice for the sprinkler
system. NFPA 16.

IIIB does not require spill control per NFPA 30. But refer to the local or
state building code for modifications to that requirement.

1. You need to know what the quantities of each type of chemical are.

2. If the quantities of flammables are small suggest UL listed cabinets and get
the stuff off the racks.

Then you've got group A plastic. NFPA 13

This is the B-R-O-A-D brush analysis. It's going to take a little time to nail
everything down but you could probably still do it. You just need more info.
Lots more.

Gotta run to a meeting..................

Subject: Rack Storage of Motor Oil

I am looking to do an evaluation of a warehouse (originally manufacturing
.20/1500) that has now been bought by an oil distributor. When I walked around
looking, all kinds of red flags went off. I am now concerned that we cannot get
there from here. Gut says this is outside of sprinkler protection. So I want to
be sure before I say we cannot help you. Bulk of product is standard motor oil
in non-relieving drums (55gal), stored on racks, mostly 3 high. Also contained
in same warehouse throughout is solid pile storage to around 12' of cases of
1qt (plastic) containers that you would purchase from your favorite reseller.
Mixed in are gallon containers of anti-freeze stored solid pile as the 1qt
containers of oil. Not to mention the moderate placement of Varsol and starter
fluid here and there.
This space appears to be just under 80,000 Sq Ft. Of course there is no
containment or other controlling measurers built into floor or racks. The 1, 1,
1ΒΌ branch lines looked awful lonely at the roof..

Thanks,

Matt
