Dude, what you've got there is a piece of cake compared to some of the stuff we
deal with on a regular basis. I'd love to have something as simple as that now
and then. <sigh>

It's really not as bad as you think, but I realize if it's not a regular menu
item it can be kind of daunting.

There are just a lot of questions that need answered.

NFPA 30 has this addressed. IIIB's as far as combustibles are at the bottom of
the list, least hazardous, quantities allowed are rather generous per the IBC.
Also and depending on arrangements and quantities you will need to define this
space per the IFC/IBC.

Regardless, you can pretty much tell the owner that the system he has now ain't
gonna fly with this new arrangement. Going from a Factory to Storage occupancy
rarely transitions easily.

If you decide to move forward with it you need to employ someone with good code
familiarization and special hazards experience. This is no simple "apply NFPA
13 and all local, state, federal and inter-galactic codes" kind of job.

Like I said, there are a lot of issues that need to be uncovered and researched
but it's not that bad.

Yeah... I was reading the data sheets this morning. LOVED the paragraph about
the small plastic containers of oil.. Something like. "System will either work
if early on small fire, or will fail altogether" LOL. Even though it is IIIB,
the arrangement and Volume is scary. Not to mention the mix.

Matt,

You have some VERY complicated and high hazard issues at this warehouse.

I would suggest finding someone well versed in fire protection schemes
involving flammable/combustible liquids AND you should take a long hard look at
FM Global Data Sheet 7-29. The non-confidential version of the data sheet is
free on the internet
(http://www.fmglobal.com/FMGlobalRegistration/default.aspx?action=new).

Good luck and be careful (from a design & liability standpoint)..a fire
incident involving the storage arrangements you described could be severe!

I am looking to do an evaluation of a warehouse (originally manufacturing

.20/1500) that has now been bought by an oil distributor. When I walked

around looking, all kinds of red flags went off. I am now concerned that we

cannot get there from here. Gut says this is outside of sprinkler

protection. So I want to be sure before I say we cannot help you. Bulk of

product is standard motor oil in non-relieving drums (55gal), stored on

racks, mostly 3 high. Also contained in same warehouse throughout is solid

pile storage to around 12_ of cases of 1qt (plastic) containers that you

would purchase from your favorite reseller. Mixed in are gallon containers

of anti-freeze stored solid pile as the 1qt containers of oil. Not to

mention the moderate placement of Varsol and starter fluid here and there.

This space appears to be just under 80,000 Sq Ft. Of course there is no

containment or other controlling measurers built into floor or racks. The 1,

1, 1< branch lines looked awful lonely at the roof..

Thanks,

Matt
