OK, I've got a dumb question - where in the codes/standards/listings are
nail plates even required? I fully agree they're a VERY good idea and
reputable contractors install them, but what code/standard/listing requires
them on sprinkler pipe?

I had a client run into a very similar issue several weeks ago where the AHJ
referenced the IRC and UPC. He insisted the nail plates weren't thick
enough (18 ga instead of 16 ga). The IRC wasn't applicable because the
project wasn't a 1 or 2 family dwelling nor a town home. The UPC didn't
apply because the CPVC was DOWNSTREAM of the BFP on a non-potable system. He
agreed that neither code applied and that since there wasn't a direct
requirement, then using 18 gage based on the UPC would seem appropriate.
