Just one final thought. The whole reason to have standpipes originally was
to get a water supply to the fire fighters at the level of the fire, without
requiring them to Haul supply lines, but a minimum of hose to that point.
(high Rise Hose Pac) So if 30' elevation up or down is the magic # as soon
as you see that or more you need to look closely, both at what the code
requires, and what is best for the fire fighters. Standpipes are the only
appliance we install that is just for fire fighters, they should have the
last word. If it's close let the ahj decide. (Yes I know that if the lowest
floor was 29' below the lowest level of FDP access, and the highest floor
was 29' above, you could have 58' top to bottom without a required standpipe
by code, but would that be a good idea?)

Subject: RE: Standpipe FDC Access

Roland,
Thanks. This is one of those circumstances that started out as a simple
verify hydraulic calculations verses the water supply. I got the drawings
and found out that the building was a mixed-use occupancy, mercantile first
level with apartments above. The architect had the apartments as 13R with
the merc at 13. So I verified the calculations based on NFPA 13 design
criteria, stated that the building would be a full 13, and that a standpipe
would most likely need to be added. Now the contractor has asked if he can
eliminate the standpipe based on FDC location. I wasn't sure, so the
questions. I'm now in the process of writing a letter that will state that
no it can not be eliminated based on FDC location. As well, I'm not an
engineer and as such cannot give sound engineering advice. Thanks to Thom
for the IBC reference material, Steve for his insight, and Richard for his
input.

Bob

Parking usually does not impede FD access but I'll let the AHJ's address
that. As Thom addressed earlier, if you physically can not reach a portion
of the exterior (say one side of the building is on the water or the side of
a cliff) then only the other three sides are looked at.
