They're most likely talking about using nitrogen cylinders, not nitrogen compressors. Rationale is that the cylinders require no maintenance, no power, etc. Big problem is if you have a leaky system you can deplete the nitrogen at the most inopportune moments, (holidays, shutdowns, weekends, middle of the night, etc) and then you have a false trip. It's hard to replace the reliability of a local air compressor.
Corrosion is typically not even a thought when it comes to this option, it's usually all about $$$$$$$. Personally I try to dissuade any client from going this route when they bring up the idea. Have a series of Data Centers with existing pre-action systems, where the owner is requesting Nitrogen to replace air compressors. They think there is a corrosion advantage? Anyone have any info on that? Can MIC survive or grow in a Nitrogen rich environment? I know that nitrogen compressors are not "Pure" nitrogen, so is there enough oxygen to feed the MIC? Any help appreciated. Thom McMahon, SET Firetech, Inc. 2560 Copper Ridge Dr P.O.
