My understanding ius there are about eight different microbes that
make up MIC. As Mark stated some are aerobic and some are anaerobic.
Some eat steel and some process the waste matter from others. And some
excrete the nutrients and oxidizers the others need to flourish while
others deplete the oxidizers that are detrimental the others. They all
get together in nice little symbiotic colonies and flourish at our
expense. The oxygen depleters seem to beat the oxygen users over time
but the reintroduction of fresh water invigorates the losers and kicks
starts the process. I don't think you can get substantial MIC in a dry
system but you do get all those other corrosion nasties. I don't think
nitrogen would have an appreciable benefit in a pre-action. This is
just my interpretation and I may be way off base. There are corrosion
engineers that can be consulted.
