As it was explained to me; They recognize that typically these environments are
LH by NFPA Standards and are required to have QR heads however it is also
recognized that typical office environments contain far greater fuel loading
than what was originally used when the standard was conceived which included
steel desks, typewriters, open areas or walled offices, not computers, tons of
paper, plastics on every desk, plastic or composite desks, combustible or
limited combustible walled cube farms (which in some cases can impede egress),
copier toners, etc.

I have dealt with Insurance Underwriters who follow the same train of thought.
There was no allowance for EC spacing in some cases.

I'm sure this varies from state to state but here in NC it's not uncommon
for state owned buildings to include the DOI spec in the contract spec's. If
anyone's familiar with this particular version of it I have a quick
question: Ordinary Hazard group-1 is the minimum design allowed but they do
give a couple exceptions. One is that QR & QREC heads listed for light
hazard are permitted as long as OH-1 density is still achieved. What would
be the benefits of applying this exception?

Thanks!
Brian Harris
