Steve,
I thought that as well, but in all my musings I also figured that the
sprinklers at the cloud level were more likely to operate than say a sprinkler
under a duct. I also figured in my little head that sprinklers would activate
at the ceiling level as well. I understand what your point is, but how do I
substantiate that with code to the inquisitive AHJ? The same would be for
Thom's suggestion of two.

If you have a full complement of sprinklers above the clouds, then the cloud
sprinklers are no different (hydraulically) than a ceiling complement below an
interstitial space, or sprinklers below obstructions such as ducts. NFPA 13 is
clear on the intent the only the most demanding complement is required to be
calculated.

My opinion only,
Steve Leyton

I would say yes to adding the two heads to the calc.

Subject: Cloud Calculations

What would the consensus be (ok, ok, I know this is the forum, but...) in an
open office enviro with uprights at the ceiling and pendent's in the ceiling
clouds in regards to calc's? I will have a 1500 sf area w/ no reduction. I
will obviously be calc'ing all the uprights w/in the design area, but what
about the pendent's in the clouds? Do I calc all the ceiling cloud heads w/in
the DA? Two heads?

Thanks,
