Kind a wondered that too. What usually happens in this type of retrofit is 1/2" outlet with 1/2" close nipple and a 1/2" x 1" reducer then running 1" pipe and reducing back down to 1/2" at the sprinkler. But with flex heads you're only having to use the close nipple and 1/2x1 reducer then screw in the flex.
But it sounds like a 1/2" outlet with a tee and two 1" flex heads attached. If the 1/2" outlet was capable of putting out a .2 for let's say 120 sq. ft (24 gpm) for example no real reason to believe it could handle two sprinklers putting out .10 at 120 sq. ft. Now if they were using EC spacing there might be an issue. You'd just have to look at the hydraulics and room layouts. Craig L. Is this what you got? If it is under seismic rules, 1/2" nipples are not allowed. -----Original Message----- From: Tom Duross [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2011 12:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Another design solution needed OK, here's one to throw around. Looked at a retrofit job last week. It's about 15K SF of office area being cut up. The old overhead grid system is all done with 5' flexheads off 1/2" outlets with reducer bushings. I asked why they called me. They need to add more heads, can I do the same as what's there now? In some instances, there are 2 flexheads off a single 1/2" outlet. Just for giggles, I ran some quick hydraulics using the main drain data, 125 S, 110 R. Seems like what's there will work (even the doubles) mostly due to the 2" branchlines between the 4" crossmains. Many need to be moved, some added, some removed,.. Keep going?
