George,
Would that it were that simple. There is a district here in Southern
California which requires recessed quick response sprinklers in all
single family garages, and that such sprinklers be provided with
sprinkler guards. Steve Leyton and I, along with a few others have used
all the considerable histrionics we have at our disposal to ask that
this policy be changed, particularly since listed guards for recessed
sprinklers are not manufactured. The response from that district was
that their concern was not for the listing of the materials, but rather
for the accidental impact discharge as a result of "lousy installation
by contractors." They initially (2004) required sprinkler guards on
concealed sprinklers in garages as well, however that was rescinded when
a new fire marshal took over.
As of fifteen minutes ago, the policy for recessed sprinkler guards is
still in force.

Best thing for a contractor to do in this case is NOT to just put on cages that
"work", but to first check with the Mfr for a listed/Approved model; if none
available, RFI Architect and ask for direction since specified item does not appear to be
available.
It would be smart to check with more than one mfr unless Architect has
specified a certain specific mfr.
Happy Birthday, Jim, it's a really small industry :) but certainly full of TOP

Subject: RE: ECOH wire guards
To all,
Please review the UL listing for sprinkler head guards, we have seen a few cases where the
sprinkler contractor "bought the farm" because the sprinkler head guards were specified
by the Architect but were not listed for the ECOH sprinkler heads. If my old brain can remember, I
cannot think of any head guard that is listed for the ECOH sprinkler. I might need to be
"educated".
Have a fire safe day!

Subject: ECOH wire guards
Hi all
We have used ECOH Viking heads and want to install guards to them The Viking D1
wire guard data sheet specifically states it is not to be used with this head
I wondered if anyone has had experience in using ECOH protection with wire
guards.
