No, definitely your basic brass pendent head. totally inaccessible. The
only way you can see it is to open the top floor trash chute door and contort
your body as far into the chute as you can get. It is about 3-4 feet above
that door (which has a head already just inside the door). It is not your
standard piping either. It is fed off a 1" galvanized elbow which comes out
of some other type of unit that has a brass lever on the bottom. Above this
contraption is some type of baffle or metal shield. There is some type of
cleaning unit piped into the chute right near where this head is. But this
is copper and has some ball valves, which were all shut. I have just never
seen anything like it.

Is there any possibility that this was a dry sidewall type head? That
could
probably be replaced without getting inside the shaft. I don't recall what
climate this was in.

That may be why it actuated - the fact that it is 30 years old. It sat at
the top of an unairconditioned chute where all the environmental heat
collects. It is subject to vibration day after day from trash banging down
the chute. It's old. Fatigue sets in. The fusible link just gave up.

That has been one of my theories. My only question is what caused the head

to go off now. It's been that way for 30 years and they've never had any
problems. I'm still confused .

Sounds like a "cleanout head", that should've been connected to domestic
water supply, was incorrectly connected to the fire system during original
construction. The head should be an open head, controlled by a valve at
the
top of the shaft. It shouldn't set off the pump or fire alarm.
