I've run into this situation many times where the geometry of the building doesn't allow you to comply with both the eave requirement and the 12" from the peak requirement w/o cold soldering. In most cases the AHJ's I've worked with felt compliance at the peak was more important than the eaves and I agree with that. These spaces are usually itsy bitsy with insulation filling almost everything at the eaves leaving you a little pocket to protect. With one AHJ we ended up complying with a row of sprinklers within 36" vertically of the peak as it would have been done in pre-2002 editions of '13. The TYCO Attic sprinklers sound good at first but when you're talking cramped little spaces like these the duct work usually makes complying with the listing of the attic sprinkler's obstruction criteria impossible. It's a balancing act but ultimately it's going to be a compromise that is called by the AHJ.
