Subject: RE: BK Design

Bob,

Back in 1978 BK was trying to sprinkler their stores with a modified
sprinkler criteria that they developed to minimize the cost of installation
and not to be installed in accordance with the legal code requirements of
the AHJ, since BK felt that the sprinkler systems were not a required
sprinkler system by code. However in today's code environment all systems
"required" or "not required" need to be installed in accordance with the
legal code. As you can see the prototype spec does not comply with any part
of NFPA 13.

If BK requires you to provide per BK's specs have your lawyer draft a hold
harmless agreement requiring BK to indemnify you and your firm and design
personal from any legal action resulting from the installation of the
sprinkler designed and installed to BK's specifications.

The professional engineer who produced the specs is long gone and
probability arguing with George Church and Joe Manning about the
deficiencies in the engineer's specifications.

Have a fire safe day!

Jim

Subject: BK Design

I'm working on a Burger King. I've never done a BK before, so what I'm
about to describe seems ridiculous.
The design criteria is based on a PE proto type from 1978. This is what the
contractor was given and told to use as "spec".
There are combustible concealed spaces above ceilings throughout premises,
but no sprinkler protection is to be provided. The design criteria is 6
sprinklers over 653 sf in the dining area. To be calc'ed light hazard.
That's it. Has anyone out here in forum land provided the system for a BK
lately? What was required/done?

Thanks,

Bob Knight, CET III
