Risk category is a term established in the 2010 edition of ASCE7, and is
defined in Table 1.5-1 of that document. If your documents establish it
as III, here's the examples from ASCE7:
Buildings and other structures not included in Risk Category IV
(including, but not limited to,
facilities that manufacture, process, handle, store, use, or
dispose of such substances as hazardous
fuels, hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste, or explosives)
containing toxic or explosive
substances where their quantity exceeds a threshold quantity
established by the authority having
jurisdiction and is suffi cient to pose a threat to the public if
released.
For purposes of determining the seismic design category it's irrelevant
whether the risk category is I-II-III.
What really nails this down, as Steve Leyton noted, is the Ss value for
the site, which is established by the location of the building in a
seismic zone. If you have the site latitude and longitude (easily
obtained from various sources) the Ss value can be determined from the
USGS, at:
http://geohazards.usgs.gov/designmaps/us/application.php
I would only start this process myself to have some guidelines prior to
asking the building structural to establish the seismic design category.

RFI time, the specifications call for bracing. I was tasked with finding out if

The structural sheet calls it;
Risk Category III
Seismic Importance Factor 1.25
There are places for about 10 more line of information but they all have X's
where there should be data.

Right. Provisions for seismic protection of buildings and building systems in
the IBC and also in NFPA 13 are now all based on ASCE 7. We rolled a new code
on 1/1/14, so moved forward to ASCE 7, 2010 here in
CA. ASCE standards establish parameters for when a building is
required to be seismically engineered. The structural engineer of
record for a given project is usually charged - sometimes in conjunction with
the soils engineer - with determining whether a particular parcel is subject to
those provisions. As Travis says, seismic has changed; IMHO, it's not for the
sprinkie to determine if seismic protection is required, only to verify with
the SEOR or through the construction documents whether or not it's required.

Seismic has changed DRASTICALLY from what we used to do. The SE will have to
provide you the structural design category and the Ss for the project.
Hopefully it is SDC of A or B and you don't have to worry about anything.
But, it is definitely no longer 40' / 80' and 4 way every change in direction.

Structural design notes sheet is no help, we are sending an RFI for

What does the structural design notes sheet provide? Is it Seismic
Category C or higher. If so, bracing is required on fire sprinkler systems. I
don't think the seismic maps really apply any longer. You need to know the
Seismic Design Category, then you need the Ss values so you can calculate your
bracing.

Can someone with experience in the area tell me if Seismic bracing is

appears to be the same seismic category as central PA, but not having worked in
