I've done it for years as well, but the National Plumbing Code prohibits the use of any pipe or fitting that is not AWWA approved upstream of the backflow, and the AHJ is enforcing it. Neither black nor galvanized steel pipe is AWWA approved. We have had to buy cement lined 90° and tee's in the past to comply.
