I had the IPC open and was curious. Which Code are they referencing? I don't
see AWWA anywhere in IPC section. IPC 605.3 allows all the below pipes. I find
it hard to believe NPC or AWWA are really that much different. The below
choices don't get you where you want to go?

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic pipe
Asbestos-cement pipe
Brass pipe
Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) plastic pipe
Copper or copper-alloy pipe
Copper or copper-alloy tubing (Type K, WK, L, WL, M or WM)
Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) plastic pipe and tubing
Cross-linked polyethylene/aluminum/cross-linked polyethylene
(PEX-AL-PEX) pipe
Cross-linked polyethylene/aluminum/high-density polyethylene
(PEX-AL-HDPE)
Ductile iron water pipe
Galvanized steel pipe
Polyethylene (PE) plastic pipe
Polyethylene (PE) plastic tubing
Polyethylene/aluminum/polethylene (PE-AL-PE) pipe
Polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT) plastic tubing
Polypropylene (PP) plastic pipe or tubing
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic pipe
Stainless steel pipe (Type 304/304L)
Stainless steel pipe (Type 316/316L)

And your fittings are:

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic
Cast-iron
Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) plastic
Copper or copper alloy
Cross-linked polyethylene/aluminum/high-density polyethylene
(PEX-AL-HDPE)
Fittings for cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) plastic tubing
Fittings for polyethylene of raised temperature (PE-RT) plastic tubing
Gray iron and ductile iron
Insert fittings for polyethylene/aluminum/polyethylene (PE-AL-PE) and
cross-linked polyethylene/aluminum/cross-linked polyethylene
(PEX-AL-PEX)
Malleable iron
Metal (brass) insert fittings for
polyethylene/aluminum/polyethylene (PE-AL-PE) and cross-linked
polyethylene/aluminum/cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-AL-PEX)
Polyethylene (PE) plastic pipe
Polypropylene (PP) plastic pipe or tubing
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic
Stainless steel (Type 304/304L)
Stainless steel (Type 316/316L)
Steel (ASME B16.9; ASME B16.11; ASME B16.28)

I've done it for years as well, but the National Plumbing Code prohibits the
use of any pipe or fitting that is not AWWA approved upstream of the backflow,
and the AHJ is enforcing it. Neither black nor galvanized steel pipe is AWWA
approved. We have had to buy cement lined 90° and tee's in the past to comply.

Use a 6" steel blind flange and have your shop cut a hole and weld a

4" PEx Gr piece of pipe in it to the length you need, this has been

done for years.
