These soffits are along one side of a 1500 sqft room. Not a pocket situation. 
The 3'-6" could be tricky as the soffits are not finished and I am guessing 
about the ceiling (but am probably within 1")

These are after the fact soffits as the architect didn't realize the bottom of 
the main beam was 8" below the ceiling and the floor to ceiling windows had 
already been installed.
