If you're talking about an exterior fire ground operation, as it has been explained to me (or as best as I recall), the sprinklers are typically shut down when the FD is mobilized and ready to begin extinguishment attack, so all water resources are directed to the hand hose lines and/or master streams. (remember, sprinklers are primarily designed for control, not necessarily complete extinguishment).
If the fire is out when the FD arrives, again the sprinkler system is shut down and the FD begins mop-up operation with all water resources being directed to the hand hose line operation. In most cases the pumper apparatus is going to control flow rates and pressures to the hose lines through its connection to a nearby hydrant. If it's an interior attack using standpipes then there may be slight variations to the procedure depending on available flows and pressure and other factors but once more, the sprinkler system is shut down so water can be directed to the hose lines. Now as far as having enough water, is the source a municipal supply or a private storage tank or large muddy puddle? Craig L. The civil guy was asking why we didn't include any extra psi drop for the outside hose allowance. I'm sure it's the way I'm trying to explain it that's not making any sense to him, can one of you more versed in the English language help me out and put it in layman's terms for me?
