Aaron,
Back in the day I worked as a fitter for Allied Fire and Safety (now in Neptune
NJ) the wise guys (and I mean it that way) I worked with always carried extra
coupons on a piece of bailing wire in truck just in case one got lost. With
that I learned they meant absolutely nothing. It is what it is. As for
mechanical fittings and flow switches, the first is easily seen not made up and
the second easily tested via the ITC. Roustabouts and Morton salt also come to
mind. Good inspectors who know what they're looking for make sure things are
right in the end, coupons or not.
Some story from AvalonBay.

That's why the hole saw should have a pilot bit for getting the coupon back
out. Also any fitting that knows what he's doing has a strung together mass
of coupons for every pipe size. For the "just in case" you lose the coupon,
albeit not from leaving inside the piping but rather losing it after you
remove it.
Or rather I hope it's not from losing it inside the pipe.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there is a requirement for proving
that the hole is actually cut and the switch or tee is not just stuck on the
pipe. I seem to remember that. And the code didn't say how you prove it but
that having the coupon attached to the device or fitting "proved" that.

Thanks for all the insight. It would appear that there is no "code" for the
display of the coupon, just a measure of "good practice".

Every time I see the coupon, I wonder if it is the coupon from that pipe and
that hole. I also wonder, how do you retrieve the coupon from a riser?
