Subject: RE: Combination Standpipes

Why does a 2-story bldg. need a standpipe? Great question

Does your current design use the stairs for your sprinkler risers? No, all
risers are in the pump room.

You'll may need a different pump due to pressure and possibly flow rate
increase for standpipes versus sprinkler flow. Plenty of pressure & flow, not a
concern.

If you design system risers routed in chases or other avenues for distribution
now you need to be providing combination standpipe risers in the stairs. Bingo

Why is an architect dictating what you provide as far as being a combined
standpipe/riser? Not exactly sure what prompted them to be added.

Sometimes it makes better sense to leave the standpipes separate from the
sprinklers. Agreed.

So there are a lot of things to consider.

Or just throw out what you did and start over and bill them EXTRA. I wish it
was that easy....

Hypothetical question:

You've completely designed a (2) story school, 6 zones with a pump, and now the
owner/architect has decided to had combination standpipes to the job. What
would be your thoughts on the amount of work involved?
