California fire code requires a class III where the floor level of the highest story is located more than 30’ above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access….not completely unfeasible for a 2 story building to require it depending on the site layout….

Maybe another question is did someone recently return from a seminar? Or perhaps better yet is what have they been smoking? Great question Does your current design use the stairs for your sprinkler risers? No, all risers are in the pump room. You’ll may need a different pump due to pressure and possibly flow rate increase for standpipes versus sprinkler flow. Plenty of pressure & flow, not a concern. If you design system risers routed in chases or other avenues for distribution now you need to be providing combination standpipe risers in the stairs. Bingo Why is an architect dictating what you provide as far as being a combined standpipe/riser? Not exactly sure what prompted them to be added. Sometimes it makes better sense to leave the standpipes separate from the sprinklers. Agreed. So there are a lot of things to consider. Or just throw out what you did and start over and bill them EXTRA. I wish it was that easy…. Craig L.
