Thanks Craig , So there wouldn't be an issue having the fire dept hooking up and injecting foam into all the wet pipe standpipes and other wet zones and the foam zone . (we are taking about 10,000 sprinkler heads)

The FDC is on the building where the foam system equipment (concentrate tank, water supply, proportioner, etc.) are located which supplies a series of foam monitors around the helipad. We had a fuel depot with an NFPA 11 foam system for the internal floating roof tanks. There is no fixed water supply and the system is manual. The FD rolls up, and pressurizes the system via their apparatus via a local hydrant. The foam tote is good for about 7 minutes of foam, system requires 55 minutes of foam. So once the tote runs out and the foam truck has already arrived, things are switched over to the foam truck who connects to the FDCs on the manifold and they pump the foam-water mix to the fuel tanks. This flows through the proportioners. I contacted the foam manufacturer to see if pumping the mixture through the proportioners would have any effect on the quality of the foam mixture and they said, it was not an issue. There is a sign posted telling the FD at what pressure to run their pump to insure proper function of the system. So to answer your question, there are cautions that need to be addressed such as the flow and pressure rate if the source was a fire apparatus versus the normal water source, the foam concentration and foam types would have to naturally be identified which shouldn't be an issue. Our situation was coordinated with the local FD which I would suggest getting on board if this were to be considered an option. Craig L. "A question has come up regarding the new helipad at the MRH. We know there is a foam system installed that should provide approx. 10 minutes of foam mixture to the helipad upon activation of the system. If foam is required for a longer period of time or if for some reason foam isn't being produced in the discharge from the monitors the question was asked would it be possible to supply a foam/water solution into the FDC on the building? I realize this would probably not produce very nice foam but I would just like to know if there is any reason why a person could not attempt this if they felt it was required? " My first response would be no , based on NFPA 16 2011 6.2.5 alone , any one else ran into this situation or offer any comments ? Thanks ! Colin Carew
