We had discussions with the Autosprink rep about 4-5 years ago and again about
2 years ago on their REVIT beta program. The way he explained it was that I
would layout out the system in 3D in Autosprink and then export it into REVIT.
I could then calculate it from within REVIT, BUT the zinger was that in order
to modify the system, I had to go back to Autosprink, edit it and then
re-export to REVIT. Within REVIT I would essentially be designing in space
with no referenced model files from the other disciplines since their work is
in REVIT.

The going back and forth between two platforms was not going to work.
Designing a system in space with nothing to reference was absurd. So we said,
pass, call us again when you get something that actually allows me to do my
layouts directly within REVIT as I am doing now.

I haven't seen or heard anything since then.

AutoSprink does have the beta for it. There are some videos of it on YouTube
and LinkedIn. It is called AutoSprink RVT. I've looked into it, but I can't
use REVIT for anything more than import/export. But, for every REVIT project
I've dealt with, the AutoSprink VR conversions have worked very well.

There is no "fire protection design" for REVIT. We use it to do layouts but
you are manually piping the system and locating sprinklers. Nothing is
automated, you still have to manually input data into your calc program. It's
a little bit clumsy to use, you have limited components with which to build
your systems, vendor provided families of some devices will kill your model
because they are overly detailed and create huge file sizes that no one will
reference.

They've told us they were working on an interface with other sprinkler packages
so we could model in REVIT to maintain compatibility and visibility with the
other disciplines and then there would be an interface with for example,
HydraCalc, but it's not happened yet.

We've been using it to do detailed FP layouts for about five years now.

Has anyone taken CAD Revit/BIM Classes for fire protection design? If so, who
was it taught by and were the classes online or in a classroom environment?
