Rocci:

We see this condition in SoCal a lot and while I can't speak for your AHJ's up
there (a pit full of vipers), we treat this condition as non-combustible down
here and just about everyone on the enforcer side agrees. If I'm understanding
correctly, you have a Type 5A building (please confirm, impacts my opinion)
that I'm assuming is four stories if it's both rated and sprinklered per 13.
If not 4 stories then they're taking sprinklers for something else like area
per floor. Anyway, the frame is plywood sheathing over stick framing with
lightweight concrete topping. The underside is enveloped with two layers of
gyp to create a one-hour floor-ceiling assembly. Then the ceiling drops -
where they occur - are non-combustible. You thus have one-hour capsules
around each guest room and the corridor. Presuming all that, I agree that
sprinkler protection is not required above the ceiling, so long as all
combustibles are encapsulated and the floor-ceiling envelope is
taped/mudded/fire sealed to maintain a one-hour fire rating.

Subject: non combustible/limited combustible space

We have a hotel we are working on and we have limited space in the corridors
(surprise surprise) so I am trying to not sprinkle the concealed space in the
corridor. Situation is a concrete deck with min. ½" plywood sheathing below it
followed by 2x8 wood joists with (2) layers of 5/8" type X gyp. The ceiling
below is 1 5/8" metal joists with 1 layer of 5/8" type X gyp , attached
directly to ceiling joists. ( We have roughly 12" from bottom of (2) layers of
gyp to top of ceiling framing.) Because the 2x8 are covered with 2 layers of
5/8" gyp can I consider this space non/limited combustible per 8.15.1.2.2? (BTW
the architect is calling this out as a 1 hour rated assembly.)

Thank you
