That’s what I pictured when I wrote my ramble.

Rocci,

It sounds like your situation looks something like this:

If this is the case then you have a situation similar to 8.15.1.2.5 and
sprinklers should be able to be omitted.

Thank you,

Subject: non combustible/limited combustible space

We have a hotel we are working on and we have limited space in the corridors
(surprise surprise) so I am trying to not sprinkle the concealed space in
the corridor. Situation is a concrete deck with min. ½” plywood sheathing
below it followed by 2x8 wood joists with (2) layers of 5/8” type X gyp.
The ceiling below is 1 5/8” metal joists with 1 layer of 5/8” type X gyp ,
attached directly to ceiling joists. ( We have roughly 12” from bottom of
(2) layers of gyp to top of ceiling framing.) Because the 2x8 are covered
with 2 layers of 5/8” gyp can I consider this space non/limited combustible
per 8.15.1.2.2? (BTW the architect is calling this out as a 1 hour rated
assembly.)

Thank you
